<p>I thought I had a reasonable amount of knowledge regarding the use of <em>Social Media/Marketing</em>.  However yesterday I was invited by Wayne Farrell of Business4Breakfast to lunch at the Ramada Hotel Chester, followed by a presentation by Pippa Adams of Prodo Media  a <em>[digital marketing agency]</em> based in Chester. </p>
<p>Pippa, Amy and Kate did a fantastic job of taking us to another level; that level was <em>“<strong>talking to you, not down to you”</strong></em> as often happens when these internet wiz kids are talking computer jargon.  Although at times Ami’s voice was very low the information passed out was tremendous.  I personally gained a lot more than I thought I would, indeed I wrote over five pages of A4 double side notes. </p>
<p>The team covered the basics of setting up accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and finally blogging sites and what they can do, what a combined WebLog; which by the way is a <em>“Website with a blog built in Blog”</em> can do for you business profile, that is if you do it CONSISTANTLY for a SHORT time each and every day. </p>
<p>I must congratulate Wayne for his inspiring leadership for arranging for his 10 breakfast groups, which by the way cover <em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Liverpool, the Wirral, Chester, North Wales and finally Warrington</span></em> for Prodo Media to make their presentation.  The only downside was that a lot of Wayne&#8217;s membership missed what was in my opinion  a tremendous and informative afternoon.  If you would like more information you can contact Pippa at <a href="mailto:pippa@prodo.com">pippa@prodo.com</a> or Wayne at <a href="mailto:wayne@waynefarrell.com">wayne@waynefarrell.com</a></p>

<p><em><strong>Speed-networking with a TWIST</strong></em></p>
<p>Last night I attended the Chester, Ellesmere &#038; Neston monthly business forum and with over 50 people but what was so refreshing was there were so many new faces.  Everybody did their individual 15 seconds of fame and unfortunately most people took longer, it’s a pity networkers can’t gauge time more accurately!  However Eric Hearn of Business Scene www.business-scean.com was presiding over the event.  Eric was there to get us started on our speed-networking with a twist.  This was the good bit; the twist was when you were going through your 60 second pitch you had to do it in the third person, as though you where actually giving testimonial on yourself, I must say it did take some minutes for a lot of people to understand but when it got going it did carry some power, the volume increased, the inhabitations where put to one side but overall I felt it was well worth doing.  What was very good was that a lot of referrals took place.  It was a very good team effort.</p>

<p><strong>Friday 18th December 2009</strong></p>
<p>A lot of people think that business networking events are all about &#8216;selling-yourself&#8217; or &#8216;working a room&#8217;.  I’ve always said that networking isn&#8217;t about that at all, it&#8217;s about building relationship and projecting you and your company image attractive to people in a way they hadn&#8217;t realised before.  It&#8217;s about developing you and your business, not ramming it down someone&#8217;s throat. </p>
<p>However, not everyone thinks they have good networking skills. They look at other people who appear to be at ease in the networking environment, and think, they a natural at this; I could never do that. You should always remember, the same as learning to drive a car, you move through the gears very slowly at first until you’ve gained a lot more experience and passed you test feeling more confident with yourself; all those people in the room had to start at some time themselves, indeed in that very same room there will be people just like you! </p>
<p>As far as I’m concerned, you can network; business networking skills can be learnt and are far easier to pick up than you might think.  </p>

Over the years I have personally heard so many lame excuses, the classic has to “Nobody in their correct mind gets up at 05-45hrs to meet the same old people, week-in and week-out” That’s complete nonsense, I have over the years, picked up more business before 09-00hrs (what they would call the official start-time) and still function for a full day afterwards.</STRONG></p>

<p>1	Always put the person you’re talking too at the front of things and yourself in second place<br />
2	Being confident and having a positive attitude is very important but don’t become a bore, let them  talk as well<br />
3	You should follow up very quickly on the people you’ve spoken with at the networking event.  This will prove your genuine and mean business<br />
4	Make sure you collect all business cards and write on them the date and venue, it certainly helps later</p>
