As you may know, I am a CML Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia patient been diagnosed in September 2007 and unfortunately, in January 2009 Prof. Clark of the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital Liverpool United Kingdom told me that the drug Imatinib in conjunction with an Interferon injection was not working and I was back to 65% Leukemic; a devastating blow to me indeed.
However, the drug Nilotinib was available but the side effects were not fully known and if this didn’t work I might not see Christmas 2009. The Prof was prepared to give it to me, if I was prepared to take it. WITHOUT IT I WOULD BE DEAD.
Unfortunately, NICE (National Institute for Health and clinical Excellence) are not prepared to licence the drug for future patients after August 2011, so therefore the only drugs available will be obsolete drugs which are either poorly effective or ones given by injection and associated with many side effects; which are very unpleasant indeed.
I will still be able to receive the Nilotonib drug because I have been on it now for a few years and it works. My concerns are for all those patients who will follow, they will not be able to receive this drug, which I think is shameful.
Prof Clark attended a European CML meeting last weekend, where about 30 CML experts met and were amazed at this decision; indeed, we in the United Kingdom appear to be the only major country in Europe where these drugs are nor available.
So, could I ask you to kindly follow the link to the petition and sign it and do this please for others who will follow; let this drug be available.

Please keep signing this petition, it is so important to those that are diagnosed NOW to able to get this treatment; I have been lucky, I’m on it.
